International Forest Day

We love protect and preserve nature because it is our life-support system — the source of the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.

We depend on healthy ecosystems for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. And that is why we choose NEAR as a partner.

The Protocol has been working with South Pole, the leading low-carbon project developer and climate solutions provider, ever since inception. It was awarded the South Pole’s Carbon Neutral Product Label 2021 for its efforts in the first year planting trees to offset the emissions. Three green projects are supported by NEAR – Kariba Forest Protection, Vegachi Forest Restoration and Afognak Forest Carbon.

While scaling is expected to increase the carbon footprint, it will still be far below that of proof of work networks, given that it is proof of stake.

Another project that stands out is the Open Forest Protocol. It is an unique web 3.0 project built on NEAR that measures, verifies and funds reforestation projects. The intent is to measure and record the levels of forestation across the world in a decentralised and immutable ledger bringing genuine, on-ground truth to the forefront. More than 25 projects have already joined the initiative.

Given the green focus of the Protocol and the Foundation, it comes as no surprise that it attracts like-minded individuals and organisations. This leads to identification of unique synergies and some innovative applications coming to the forefront.
